What Is The Standard Deviation?
What is the standard deviation?
the square root of the variance of a set of data. The most important measure of dispersion is the standard deviation. Like the mean deviation, standard deviation differentiates sets of scores with equal averages. But the advantage of standard deviation over mean deviation is its usefulness in statistical works. Standard deviation has several applications in inferential statistics. The smaller the value of the standard deviation, the smaller the spread of the range around the mean. the bigger the value of the standard deviation, the bigger the spread of the range around the mean. the manner of computing the standard deviation is illustrated in the next example.
